Vero Beach High School ESE Teacher
While in high school, Stephen Byrd decided he wanted to be a high school baseball coach, hence his decision to become a teacher. What he never imagined as a teenager was that he would fall in love with teaching and make it his career.
Stephen, a Vero Beach High School ESE teacher, began teaching 15 years ago, 11 of those years being in the public school system. ESE stands for ‘Exceptional Student Education.’ These are the teachers who teach students with learning disabilities, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, and physical impairments.
Though baseball was Stephen’s initial impetus for becoming a teacher, due to his experience with ESE students and his love of giving students the same opportunities that others take for granted, he has quit baseball to focus on Unified Sports. Unified Sports is a branch of the Special Olympics that includes students with and without disabilities. Vero Beach High School offers flag football, track, croquet, basketball, and bowling opportunities.
Stephen requests supplies that will provide his students with new ways to explore, learn, and feel safe. These include hands-on learning activities, sensory activities, puzzles, and the supplies needed to create a calming area that is a safe place to escape.

I want to thank What a teacher wants, What a teacher needs. They asked me to make a wish list for my ESE classroom. I thought long & hard about what would be most beneficial for my students and get the most out of them. After I created the list a genie appeared in my classroom by the name of Jen. She brought several educational supplies and materials that my students use on a daily basis. This organization has made my classroom and other classrooms a better place to learn. Our county is lucky to have what a teacher wants, what a teacher needs.
